Zero-Knowledge Encryption
Zero-knowledge encryption is a privacy-first approach to data security in which only the data owner, not the platform, provider, or third parties, can access the contents of a file. Even the service facilitating storage or transfer cannot view, decrypt, or alter the data, under any circumstances.
How Does Zero-Knowledge Encryption Work?
With zero-knowledge encryption, encryption and decryption happen entirely on the user’s device before the data is uploaded or shared. This means that the encryption keys never leave your environment, and the provider (like TitanFile) has no technical means to access the original content, even if compelled by a subpoena or targeted by a breach.
In simple terms: if you lose your key, not even TitanFile can retrieve your data.
Why Zero-Knowledge Matters
This encryption model is especially valuable in compliance-heavy industries like legal, healthcare, financial services, and government. It provides an additional layer of assurance that even the most sensitive information, like medical records, legal files, or confidential financial data, cannot be accessed by anyone except the intended user.
It’s a cornerstone of privacy laws and frameworks such as:
- HIPAA – Ensuring only authorized parties access PHI
- GDPR – Supporting the principle of data minimization
- PIPEDA – Reinforcing user control over personal data
Zero-Knowledge in TitanFile
TitanFile leverages advanced encryption technologies that align with zero-knowledge principles. Files are encrypted on your device using AES-256 before being uploaded. We do not store, manage, or have access to your private keys — meaning only you and your intended recipients can open the files you send.
This approach supports our commitment to enterprise-grade security, Canadian data residency, and compliance with frameworks like ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and more.
