Main Takeaways from ILTA LegalSEC Summit 2017

On June 13 and 14th, TitanFile attended the ILTA LegalSEC Summit 2017 in Arlington, Virginia as sponsors of the event. The event brings together cybersecurity professionals of all levels in for educational and insightful experience with many opportunities to network and familiarize themselves with the industry.

TitanFile had the honour of being a sponsor at the event and held a booth where we were able to meet and introduce ourselves to many enthusiastic security professionals. We found the event to be a big success, and we really enjoyed connecting with many like-minded individuals and showcasing TitanFile as a secure file sharing solution.

Our main giveaway this year was a Parrot MAMBO Drone. However, booth attendees were still able to receive some fun and colourful socks for participating in booth activities.

Here are our three main takeaways from LegalSEC 2017:

  • The ISO/IEC 27001 Standard/Certification

ISO/ IEC 27001 was an over-arching theme of this year’s summit and its importance was highlighted throughout the event.The ISO/ IEC 27001 Certification is the information security management system (ISMS) gold seal of approval, demonstrating the holder of this designation has gone through a formal, rigorous, and ongoing audit process. The importance of this certification is drawn from the growing trend of consumers who are becoming more conscious about how their information is managed. Law firms are now more expected to comply and uphold new competitive standards of data security. The certification demonstrates law firms are following the right procedures to safeguard information, and as a data encryption platform, we understand clients’ growing needs of asking for more information on security practices.

  • Keynote Speaker: Latham & Watkins LPP’s Serrin Turner in ‘Legally Pwned’

One of the key messages we took away from Turner’s very insightful talk, Legally Pwned, is that law firms are increasingly becoming targets for cyber attacks. The talk references the data breach of two major US law firms, resulting in three Chinese nationals facing charges for allegedly hacking the law firms in a scheme to trade on information about imminent mergers and acquisitions back in 2014 and 2015.Turner stresses the importance of law firms the need for legal services to be compliant and up to par with today’s current cyber threats and to be vigilant on cyber security.

  • The Progressive Move Towards Cloud

Although the cost-saving and easy to implement tool has improved rapidly over the recent years, cloud has already gained a pretty bad reputation in the past by the web security community, invoking skepticism on the use of it in handling sensitive information. The tool is now being adopted and embraced by progressive firms and are becoming more widely used by respected firms, however, traditional firms remain weary. The progression of cloud-based software systems and its notable benefits is a commonly discussed topic of the summit. From our perspective, although we are supporters of cloud computing, we must advice strong vetting when choosing a vendor for cloud storage.
